Welcome to SAS

We are a student cultural organization

The South Asia Society (SAS) is a student organization dedicated to promoting cultural unity and awareness among its members and the University of Pennsylvania community. Penn has always fostered a thriving and enterprising South Asian community, and along with other campus South Asian organizations, SAS has many opportunities to reach out to Penn students and faculty.

Specifically, SAS’ goals are:

  • To increase awareness of and educate the Penn community about South Asian culture and heritage.
  • To create an environment in which students are encouraged to explore and experience South Asian culture.
  • To address pertinent issues that face the entire South Asian community.
  • To encourage social interaction between South Asian students.
  • To facilitate the adjustment process for incoming South Asian students at Penn.

What we do

Events

Cultural Events

Mini-Cultural Show: This amazing show features performances from the SAS performing arts groups and gives freshmen a taste of what SAS has to offer.
Fall Cultural Show: With over 200 performers, this event showcase South Asian talent at its best, whether it’s singing, dancing, acting, or anything in between.
Movie Screenings: It’s hard to stay on top of the latest Bollywood movies when you’re in college – so SAS holds movie screenings throughout the year of the most popular and most acclaimed movies that deal with South Asians.

Social Events

Back to School Party: Look out for details about our bi-annual Back to School parties held in Center City every September & January to kick off a hell of a good new term.
Downtown Dinners: Each semester, SAS organizes dinners with other SAS members in your class for you to eat, drink, and get to know one another.
Lineage Program: SAS pairs freshmen up with a Big Brother or Sister who can help you through the trials and tribulations of freshman year.
South Asia Society Semi-Formal: This elegant affair boasts a dessert reception and full open bar for an annual event that remains unforgettable especially for the seniors who have the honor of receiving their Senior Superlatives at Semi.

Political Events

Symposium on the Awareness of South Asian Issues (SASAI): This event hosts South Asians from the greater Philadelphia area to partake in numerous workshops, panels, discussions, and speakers dedicated to problems facing our culture.
Community Service: Lending a helping hand is something everyone loves to do, and SAS helps to promote philanthropy through various community service events.
Speakers: SAS is always eager to bring you informative and inspiring speakers on topics like religious unity, the socio-political climate of South Asia, entrepreneurship, and even entertainment.
